The History of The View Hotel Eastbourne
Built in 1976 by the Transport and General Workers’ Union, now Unite the Union, the building originally opened as the Eastbourne Centre. It was created as a place for workers to rest, learn, and come together, welcoming delegates and visitors from across the UK.
In 2026, the building celebrates its 50th anniversary. Now operating as The View Hotel Eastbourne, it continues to honour its origins while embracing its role as a modern, welcoming hotel. Still owned by Unite the Union, the hotel remains closely tied to its heritage, including its connection to the International Workers Mural, which was commissioned for the building in 1976. Today, The View stands as both a contemporary seaside hotel and an important part of Eastbourne’s social and cultural history.
